When people think of coastal walks, they often picture warm summer days. But winter on the Southern Ocean Walk which follows the start and southern part of the Heysen trail offers a unique and unforgettable experience that’s not to be missed. Here are five reasons why winter might just be the best season to join us:
1. Ideal walking conditions
As temperatures increase so does the challenge to our body’s ability to cope with rugged terrain. Walking in cool temperatures is not only a blessing but also leaves you feeling far more energized at the end of the day. Furthermore, you won’t need to carry additional water making your backpack lighter than during warmer times of the year. With fewer visitors on the track, you’ll also enjoy a deeper sense of peace and connection to nature. It’s the perfect time for those who prefer solitude and quiet reflection.

2. The Landscape Comes Alive
Winter transforms the coastline and adjoining forests into a dramatic spectacle. The landscape changes into a lush green backdrop. Flowing creeks, stormy skies, and the ever-changing sea create a raw beauty you can only witness in the cooler months.

3. Remarkable Wildlife Sightings
Winter is the pre-eminent time to marvel at the many different fungi on display in all their glory. They are the great recyclers breaking down leaf matter that roots can then absorb. Deep Creek National Park which forms part of our walk is one of the South Australia’s most important sites to see them at close range. Winter is also prime time for spotting southern right whales as they migrate along the coast. You will also see dolphins, seals and seabirds that thrive in these conditions along our coastline.

4. Cozy Comforts Await
After a day of fresh air and magnificent scenery is there anything more enticing than coming back to the comfort of our Homestead? A hot shower, a roaring wood fire and a glass of superb red wine from McLaren Vale or Langhorne Creek await. Does it get any better? Reflect on the day’s sights and enjoy freshly made canapes while our Chef cooks up a storm.

5. Breathtaking Photography Opportunities
With softer light, misty mornings, and moody skies, winter offers some of the most photogenic moments on the trail—perfect for both professional and amateur photographers alike.

So if you’re looking for a new kind of adventure this winter, the Southern Ocean Walk promises beauty, comfort, and a chance to see nature at its wildest and most wonderful.
