Following research and persuasive lobbying by a dedicated working group the Government of South Australia has announced a budget allocation of $6m to upgrade part of the Heysen Trail.
The focus will be on the section of trail between Cape Jervis and Victor Harbor on which The Southern Ocean Walk is based. Anyone who has walked this section of the trail can testify to its extraordinary beauty and diverse scenery.

Specifically, there will be upgrades to sections of the trail to befit a world class walk of this calibre as well as walker-only campsites and upgrades to campground facilities.
The Gateway that heralds the commencement of the 1200km Heysen Trail (Australia’s longest walking trail) will be upgraded from its current low key layout to a design that does justice to this renowned walk.
Moves are also underway to establish a wheelchair friendly trail through remnant vegetation in Deep Creek Conservation Park.
